Course Description
The Scottish Baccalaureate in Languages (SCQF Level 7) is a prestigious qualification designed for motivated S6 learners who want to deepen their study of languages. It combines a coherent group of Higher and Advanced Higher courses with an Interdisciplinary Project, allowing students to develop independence, initiative, and strong research skills. This pathway offers excellent preparation for university and enhances employability in an increasingly global world.
Assessment and Mandatory Requirements
The Languages Baccalaureate is awarded on the basis of:
Component Courses – Pupils complete a coherent group of language courses, including at least one Advanced Higher and one other language at Higher or above. Suitable languages are: French, Spanish, Italian, German and English*. These courses are assessed in the usual SQA way through exams and coursework.
* A Higher or AH qualification in English by the end of S6 is a mandatory component.
Interdisciplinary Project (IP) – This is the central assessed element. Pupils choose a topic that links their languages with another area of interest. They plan, research, present, and evaluate their work. The project is graded A–C and must be passed to achieve the Baccalaureate.
The final award (Pass or Distinction) reflects the overall performance across the component courses and the Interdisciplinary Project.
